Paul Tibbets (February 23, 1915 – November 1, 2007), United States Air Force brigadier general most noted as the pilot of the Enola Gay of World War II, authentic autographed 8 x 10 cardstock photograph.
The Enola Gay, named for Tibbets' mother, was the first aircraft to drop an atomic bomb in the history of warfare on the city of Hiroshima, Japan. The attack on Hiroshima and the subsequent bombing of Nagasaki, which remain the only use of nuclear weapons for warfare in history, served to avoid a costly invasion of the Japanese mainland and facilitated the end of the War.
