Civil War soldier Charles Taylor, dated 1864, Philadelphia, writes to his cousin giving news of their son's death.

Taylor writes in-part: "With a sad heart I write these lines to thee... recorded yesterday and I was so shocked when learning poor John's fate that I really could not muster up resolution enough yesterday to reply...The noble boy fell with the glorious flag of our country upon that fatal field, oh how often he has been before me... sad tidings of his death so many of the generous traits of his character has come upon my memory... My dear cousin my heart unites in warmest sympathy with you for the loss of so noble a son... he set forth full of youth and life and offered his all on behalf of his country, and he has said to me he was willing to lay his life upon the altar of his beloved land, and should strive to perform his full duty in every respect... Do give my kindred love to cousin Jane."
