May McAvoy (September 8, 1899 – April 26, 1984), American actress who worked mainly during the silent-film era, vintage, 8 x 10, satin finish photograph. Credited to notable Hollywood photographer Melbourne Spurr. Dated May 12, 1929.
After appearing in more than three dozen films, McAvoy co-starred with Ramón Novarro and Francis X. Bushman in director Fred Niblo's 1925 production of 'Ben-Hur' released by MGM. The feature-length film was one of the most lavish and spectacular productions of the silent movie era.
Although her voice was not heard in 'The Jazz Singer,' she did speak in several other films, including the second "all-talkie" released by Warner Brothers, 'The Terror,' which was directed by Roy Del Ruth and co-starred Conrad Nagel.
Melbourne Spurr, deaf photographer who became one of the top celebrity portraitists in 1920s Hollywood. He maintained a very popular private studio while other photographers in his field went to work for the big motion picture studios like MGM, Fox and Warner Bros.
Features original Melbourne Spurr 'blind' credit stamping. Front bears original artist touch up and cropping markings. Verso bears original handwritten notations, press clipping - stamp dated May 12, 1929 and Spurr ink stamping. In good condition.
