John E. Wool (February 20, 1784- November 10, 1869), 19th century U.S. Army officer, original Carte-de-visite photograph.  Published by E. Anthony of New York from a Mathew Brady negative.

John E. Wool was an officer in the U.S. Army during three consecutive U.S. wars: the War of 1812, the Mexican War, and the Civil War. During the War of 1812, Wool fought at the Battle of Queenston Heights, as well as leading with distinction at the Battle of Plattsburg. In the Mexican War, Wool commanded the Center Division and led the Chihuahuan Expedition, as well as joining Zachary Taylor at the Battle of Buena Vista.

When the Civil War broke out, Wool, at age 77, a brigadier general for 20 years, commanded the Department of the East. He was the oldest officer to execute active command in either army during the war.

Approximately 2.5 x 4 inches in size, this Carte-de-visite photograph is in good condition, aside from a slight touch of expected aging.
