Alice Morse Earle

Alice Morse Earle (1853-1911), American colonial historian and author, authentic, autographed vintage handwritten quotation (AQS), 7.75 x 5. Earle's writing honed in on the finer sociological details, making her works an invaluable resource for modern social historians. Her works focused on colonial America, particularly the New England area, which is beautifully captured in "Curious Punishments of Bygone Days" (1896).

Her writings, beginning in 1890, focussed on small sociological details rather than grand details, and thus are invaluable for modern social historians. She wrote a number of books on colonial America (and especially the New England region) such as 

Extracted from the pages of a 1902 Autograph Calendar book recovered from Orange Memorial Hospital, New Jersey, Seelye added the following quote to a page with the printed date of November 4: "When I was a youth old age did appear / A revered and beautiful thing / For Knowledge must _ as year follows year / And Wisdom from Knowledge should spring. / But I found the same years that supplied me with Knowledge / Took the Power to digest it away. / And let out the store I had gathered in college / Through leaks that increased every day. / So I say - and think not I say it in jest, / You will find it is true to the letters; / That the only thing Old People ought to know best / Is that Young People ought to know Better. Alice Morse Earle."

Overall light toning, a faint ink smudge, a vertical fold along the right edge that passes through one letter of the signature, and adhesive professionally affixed to the left edge, otherwise fine condition.
