John Hancock (January 23, 1737 – October 8, 1793), American politician and signer of the Declaration of Independence, partly-printed document, filled out by Hancock, with his last name incorporated into the text of the document where he adds the name of his uncle "Thomas Hancock." As one of the wealthiest men in the 13 colonies, Hancock filtered his money into the colonial cause. A noted Patriot of the American Revolution, Hancock served as president of the Second Continental Congress and was the first and third Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. His oversized signature on the Declaration of Independence made the name "John Hancock" a universal synonym representing penning one's signature.

This one page document, dated "Boston, May 11, 1764" is a bill of lading for a ship in Boston Harbor. In part: “Shipped by the Grace of God, in good Order and well Condition’d, by "Thomas Hancock" (the uncle of John Hancock)... in and upon the good Ship called "Hannah & Martha" whereof is Mafter, under God, for this prefent Voyage, "Archibald McPheters" and now riding at Anchor in the "Harbour of Boston" and by God's Grace bound for "Annapolis Royall." Also signed at the conclusion by Archibald McPheters.

Measuring approximately 9 x 4.5, this document is in fine condition, with mild toning. A wonderful opportunity to own Hancock's original handwriting, including the incorporated surname of "Hancock," from the man himself.

Provenance: Ex. Christies, Ex. Charles Walker of Cambridge, Mass. (1862-1900) - The present owners, by descent.
