John Hancock (January 23, 1737 [O.S. January 12, 1736] – October 8, 1793), partly-printed document, partially filled out and signed within the body by Hancock. This one page document, approximately 9 x 4.5 inches, dated "Boston 17 Jany 1776" is a bill of lading for a ship in Boston Harbor.
In part: “Shipped by the Grace of God, in good Order and well Condition’d, by "John Hancock" in and upon the good "Brig." called the "Lydia" whereof is Mafter, under God, for this prefent Voyage, "James Scott" and now riding at Anchor in the "Harbour of Boston" and by God’s Grace bound for "London" to fay, "Forty One Cask of Pottash."
This document is in fine condition, with scattered mild toning and a slight repair to a tear on verso (barely visible at all). A wonderful opportunity to own the original signature and hand writing from the man himself, whose own name universally represents penning one's signature, signing their own "John Hancock."
Provenance: Ex. Christies, Ex. Charles Walker of Cambridge, Mass. (1862-1900) - The present owners, by descent.
