William T. Sherman

William Tecumseh Sherman (February 8, 1820 – February 14, 1891), American soldier, businessman, educator and author, autographed sepia 15.75 x 19 Sarony photograph, matted and framed to 20.5 x 24.25. Sherman served as a General in the Union Army during the Civil War, for which he received recognition for his outstanding command of military strategy as well as criticism for the harshness of the "scorched earth" policies that he implemented in conducting total war against the Confederate States.

This impressive photograph bears the signature, “W.T. Sherman / General / New York May 1888.” Taken in 1888 by Napoleon Sarony, this photograph was used in the second edition of Sherman's “Memoirs” published in 1889. This image also served as a model for the engraving of the first W.T. Sherman U.S. postage stamp issued in 1893.

In fine condition, with some light toning at right area of the background where it was signed in lower right by Sherman with adequate contrast. Frame exhibits a few light chips, professionally repaired.
