Jean Augustin Ernouf (29 August 1753 - 12 September 1827), French general and colonial administrator during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, authentic, autographed letter (LS). This two page letter measures approximately 8" x 13" in size and is dated May 7, 1796. The letter is on his official letterhead as Major General in command of the army.

The letter is addressed to General Paul Grenier. This lengthy letter discusses the re-organization of a light infantry brigade, which Ernouf wishes done as soon as possible so that he can advise the Minister of War.

Ernouf was a combat commander, however, his real strengths came in organizational and logistical strategy. In 1801, Napolean appointed him as governor general of the French colony in Saint-Dominique and Guadeloupe. He was forced to capitulate by the British in 1810. Napolean was enraged by his demise, and charged him with treason.

This untranslated, two page letter is crisply signed at the conclusion by Ernouf. It is in good to very good condition, with overall light toning not affecting the signature. There are scattered creases, small tears and expected intersecting folds.
