John Hinton (3 April 1756 - 14 January 1819), 4th Earl of Poulett, authentic, autographed manuscript letter (LS). The letter is dated March 15, 1783 and is approximately 7" x 9" in size. It is simply addressed to "Sir", and concerns instructions relative to disbanding the Militia with conflicting orders, along with confusion about a King's Order to the Lord Lieutenant, amongst other things.
Poulett was styled Viscount Hinton between 1764 to 1788 and was a British peer and Colonel of the East Devon Militia. He was the son of Vere Poulett, 3rd Earl Poucett and Mary Butt.
Poulett suceeded his father as Earl in 1788 and was also appointed Lord Lieutenant of Somerset. on May 30, 1794, he was commissioned a Knight of the Thistle. Poulett was also appointed a Lord of the Bedchamber to George III as well as commissioned Colonel of the East Somersetshire Militia and East Somerset Regiment of Yeomanry Cavalry. He and his first wife, Sophia Pocock, daughter of Admiral Sir George Pocock, had ten children.
This one page letter is crisply signed by at the conclusion by Poulett as Colonel Hinton. It is in good to very good condition, with overall light toning not affecting the signature. The letter also contains scattered creases and expected intersecting folds.
