Joseph Ernest Renan

Joseph Ernest Renan (28 February 1823 - 2 October 1892), French philosopher and writer, authentic, autographed annotated letter (ALS). This two page letter measures approximately 4" x 6" in size and is dated June 8, 1880. 

Renan was a French expert of Middle East ancient languages and civilizations. He was also a well known philosopher and writer whom was devoted to his native province of Brittany. He is best known for his influential historical works on early Christianity and his political theories, especially concerning nationalism and national identity.

This letter is crisply signed at the conclusion by Renan. It is in good to very good condition, with overall light toning not affecting the signature. The letter contains some expected intersecting folds.
