Robert Franklin Stroud (January 28, 1890 – November 21, 1963), more famously and affectionately known as the "Birdman of Alcatraz," federal American prisoner, cited as one of the most notorious and dangerous criminals in American history. Authentic, autographed, typed letter (TLS), September 23, 1938.

Imprisoned for manslaughter in 1909, Robert Stroud committed several violent offenses behind bars (including the murder of a guard) and was eventually transferred to Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary. He began serving a 17-year term there on December 19, 1942, and became inmate #594. In 1943, he was assessed by psychiatrist Romney M. Ritchey, who diagnosed him as a psychopath, with an I.Q. of 134. His famous bird-keeping and ornithological research had taken place at Leavenworth Prison, but with such activities prohibited at Alcatraz, Stroud instead occupied himself with writing manuscripts, studying law and petitioning for his release.

Stroud writes to his sister Miss Mamie E. Stroud. Fabulous content relating to his Canaries he was breeding and selling from inside the prison walls of Leavenworth Prison, Leavenworth, Kansas.

Measuring approximately 8.5 x 11", this letter is in fine condition, with light toning and the expected mailing folds. Two pages.
