Ernest Hemingway

Ernest Miller Hemingway (July 21, 1899 – July 2, 1961), prolific American author and journalist, set of two original, vintage black and white photographs, each measuring 2.25 x 2.5 inches. Property of Ernest Hemingway’s friend and fishing buddy, Roberto Herrera, who attended cockfights with Hemingway.

Hemingway won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954, and is responsible for such classics as "The Sun Also Rises," "A Farewell to Arms," "For Whom the Bell Tolls" and "The Old Man and the Sea."

Until recently, Hemingway memorabilia has been exceedingly scarce. This piece hails from the personal property of Roberto Herrera Sotolongo, Hemingway's personal secretary and confidant. First meeting at the height of WWII in 1942, Herrara became a crew member aboard Hemingway's boat, the "Pilar." During this time, Hemingway was working for the US government, patrolling the Gulf Stream for German submarines. Their friendship grew through shared interests, and when Hemingway found himself traveling extensively towards the mid 1940's, it was Herrara he left in charge of his Cuban home, Finca La Vigia (Lookout Farm).

In 1961, after Hemingway's jarring suicide, Herrara was appointed head of the author's affairs in Cuba, carrying out instructions to deed the property and contents of Finca La Vigia to the people of Cuba "as a place of opportunity for wider education and research, to be maintained in his memory."
