King George V of England custom display featuring a velvet fabric swatch removed from the Royal Robe worn by the King during his coronation.
George V (George Frederick Ernest Albert; 3 June 1865 – 20 January 1936), King of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions, and Emperor of India, from 6 May 1910 until his death in 1936.
George and Mary's coronation took place at Westminster Abbey on 22 June 1911, and was celebrated by the Festival of Empire in London. In July, the King and Queen visited Ireland for five days; they received a warm welcome, with thousands of people lining the route of their procession to cheer. Later in 1911, the King and Queen travelled to India for the Delhi Durbar, where they were presented to an assembled audience of Indian dignitaries and princes as the Emperor and Empress of India on 12 December 1911.
The present velvet fabric swatch measures approximately .5 x .5 inchs and has been affixed to an 8 x 10" print.
This display is accompanied by a copy of the original detailed vintage provenance note which reads in full, "Piece of the material out of which King George V of England robe was made that was worn by him at the Coronation Durbar in India 1912" (erronously ID'd as 1912 as the Coronation was 1911). Also accompanied by two copies of informational material relating to the historic Luray Museum.
Provenance: From the Luray Museum of Luray, Virginia.
