Ulysses S. Grant - Original Piece of His Personal Cigar with Provenance from 1889
A dozen or more fragments of the personally owned cigar of Ulysses S. Grant. Cigar pieces are enclosed in a plastic sleeve and affixed to a custom 8 x 10" authentication display issued by John Reznikoff of University Archives.
Includes a letter from University Archives attesting to the authenticity along with a full color copy of the 1889 letter of provenance which reads "I take pleasure in sending you a cigar, one of the last in the last box used by Gen. U.S. Grant. Lieut. Totten was ordered to join his battery (Light Batt., 4th Art'y, Newport, RI). Wagenor and I were ordered to pack his furniture. Lieut. Totten gave the enclosed bottle & cigar to Wagenor,. He gave it to me, and I, knowning the captain's feelings and politics in regard to Gen. Grant, take pleasure in presenting it to Capt. J.A. Fessenden, if the captain will take the trouble to write a line to Lieut. Totten. He will verify my statement as to teh genuineness and how I came in possession of the cigar."
To our knowledge the first Ulysses S. Grant personally owned cigar ever offered on the Americana market.
